Treatments
Chinese medicine is an ancient system with a unique approach to health, which has evolved and changed over time so that it remains highly relevant today. It offers simple, but effective solutions to a wide range of both short and long term conditions.
There are five main styles of practice - acupuncture, tuina massage, herbs, qi gong exercises and dietary advice. They may be used individually or in combination and offer an effective alternative or complement to conventional medicine. Your practitioner will be able to discuss them with you and recommend the best approach for your condition.
Chinese medicine seeks to treat the root of health problems by treating the person as an individual and as a whole physically, energetically and emotionally. It looks for connections between the different areas of the body and takes into account all the factors which may be affecting a persons health and life, including accidents and illnesses, emotions and tension, work, diet and sport.
In addition to the hands on treatment practical advice on exercise, relaxation, diet and nutrition may be given.
Acupuncture - This is a versatile form of treatment which can be used to treat a wide range of conditions. Very fine needles are inserted into specific points along channels of energy. The procedure is virtually painless and many people experience a feeling of relaxation during and after the session.
Herbal medicine- This traditional medicine uses combinations of herbs and minerals to treat a wide variety of conditions. It is especially effective for digestive problems, hormonal changes and skin conditions. A herbal prescription is created on an individual basis and will be changed as the condition changes. Patients usually see the practitioner every two weeks to be reassessed.
Tuina - This is a highly advanced system of massage which can be used to treat both physical and internal problems. The techniques are often gentle, but the effects deep and long lasting. It is usually administered through light clothing.
Shiatsu - Traditional Japanese bodywork which is based on the principles and underlying philosophy of Chinese medicine. Like the Chinese techniques it works on the whole, focusing on channels of energy and pressure points. Where there is a lack of flow there will be symptoms or the beginnings of disease. The practitioner draws the atttention to this lack of flow to enable the person to awaken their healing potential. It is usually administered through light clothing and practitioners often use a futon mattress on the floor, rather than a treatment couch.
Treatment of Children - This involves the use of massage, exercises, superficial acupuncture and advice for many childhood conditions and can be a valuable and non-invasive complement or alternative to more conventional treatments. Chinese medicine believes that the treatment of childhood illnesses is extremely important for health in later life.
Qi Gong - This is the practice of traditional Chinese exercises and meditation to rebalance the body physically and energetically and which complements hands on treatment. We can recommend different exercises to suit each individual.
Tai Ji Chuan - This is a moving form of qi gong involving a series of gentle exercises to relax the body and mind.
Diet and Nutrition - The Chinese understanding of diet is both practical and individual. Advice in this area may be given as part of a holistic treatment strategy
Physiotherapy - This well established form of treatment can be used to treat many physical conditions, including back and neck injuries, athritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, sports injuries etc. We can also offer rehabilitation for neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, strokes and head injuries. Our approach involves hands on techniques including massage, mobilisation and manipulation, as well as a full range of exercises and postural advice etc.
In Conjunction with the Maya Homeopathic Practice:
Homeopathy- A holistic system of healing that stimulates the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. Using homeopathic remedies which promote the bodies natural ability to self heal, it treats the whole person on every level - physical, mental and emotional and recognises that symptoms are an expression of disease, but not the disease itself. Homeopaths aim to help their patients achieve freedom from limitations in their lives and ideally, to reach a level of health where they are no longer dependant on any medicine or therapy.
