Yin Yang and 5 Elements: exercises and self massage

Sandra Hill

6th December

Yin yang and 5 elements (also know as 5 phases, 5 agents and wu xing) are the two main concepts which underpin Chinese philosophy and medicine. Developed over two and a half thousand years ago from the observation of the natural world they are a means of describing both the make up of our world and its constantly changing state. In this first seminar Sandra Hill will introduce these classical ideas in a very practical way and show how they are still fundamental to our understanding of both ourselves and our world today.

Treating Simple Health Conditions

Sandra Hill & Rosey Grandage

11th January

In this seminar we will look at simple, practical ways of diagnosing and treating common health conditions. This will involve exploring some of the key concepts of Chinese medicine in a very practical way to develop an understanding of why health changes and how we can maintain a balance both for ourselves and in those around us. As this is a small group there will be a chance to adapt the session to meet individual needs and interest, but the sort of conditions we might cover would be back and neck pain, joint pains, headaches, indigestion, asthma and chest conditions etc

Face Diagnosis - the face as a window to health

Maura Bright

25th January

Chinese Face Reading is a diagnostic art with its roots in Taoist and Buddhist philosophy. A knowledge of the face can aid diagnosis in the treatment room. Faces give immediate information about gender, beauty and emotion. However, Chinese face reading can tell us much more about a person's core personality by interpreting the mixture of shapes and features using the theories of 5 elements and yin yang. Our mixture of elements reveals constitutional energies and our potentials and challenges through life. Inappropriate diet, persistent emotions, toxins and pollutants and organ stress are also reflected in lines, congestion and colours in the facial zones. Knowledge of the Face Zones is a good adjunct to diagnosis and lifestyle and dietary advice.

Massage for Mums and Children (7 years up)

Rosey Grandage

1st March

The Chinese value the mother and child relationship very highly. Energetically the mother is very close to her child, so traditionally she is the best person to give treatment. In our modern, fast, high tec world we often loose physical contact and touch so this is your chance to get together with your child and learn more about ideas and techniques of massage and meditation. It will be a practical day learning and developing simple massage skills both for general relaxation and to treat specific things. As this is a small group we can adapt the session to meet individual needs and interests, but we will probably cover things like neck and joint pains, insomnia, restlessness, cough and colds, ear infections etc. There will also be time for children to massage their mums and give them some TLC too!

Living According to the Four Seasons

Sandra Hill & Rosey Grandage

29th March

One of the fundamental concepts of classical Chinese thinking is that man is a microcosm of the universe. In our modern, fast world it is easy to loose our connection with nature and the natural balance of the world. This seminar will explore classical Chinese ideas about the rhythms, patterns and seasons which affect us everyday and examine the ways we can adapt our lifestyles to stay in tune with these cycles. We will use diet, exercise, thinking, work patterns, dress and colours as a practical focus for the day
